Optimist Club Donates Dictionaries to Fourth Graders

The Houston Optimist Club conducted its second annual dictionary presentations to fourth graders in the surrounding schools earlier this month.

Each year, the Optimist Club raises funds to purchase dictionaries for children so they can have one of their own to use at home or school. The club said the fourth grade is chosen because they are at a stage in their education where they are seeing a lot of new words and need to know what the definition is or how to spell them.

The Houston Optimist Club made presentations at Raymondville School, Wellspring Christian Academy, Success School and Houston Schools to 116 students. Along with the dictionaries, the students heard a short message from President Don Lockman, encouraging them to look up the meaning of the word “optimist,” keeping a positive attitude in life and studying hard while in school.

The Houston Optimist Club is a not-for-profit organization that promotes the welfare of children and their future. All money raised by the club is tax deductible and stays in the local area to promote projects for the kids in our community. Anyone interested in joining the Optimist Club or helping with one of its community projects may contact Lockman at 417-967-3725 or Rhonda Neal at 967-4444 for more information.
