It’s been a summer whirlwind for the McCowns of Bucyrus. They capped horseshoe pitching competition earlier this month by winning first place in their class at the state tournament at Wentzville.
Virgle and Donra McCown, as well as other family members, traveled to several locations to compete.
At the state tourney, Virgle McCown took first in men’s class B with a 6-2 record. His wife, Donra, won first in class G with a 5-0 tally. Virgle was named “rookie of the year” for Missouri for the 2008 year at a Sept. 5 banquet of the state association. Family members Russell and Tyler, both took second in their classes.
They also competed in these tournaments:
-World Tournament in August at Springfield, Ill. Virgle took second in his class and Donra won ninth in her class. Grandson Tyler won ninth in the junior boys’ class.
-Missouri State Fair, Sedalia, in August: Virgle won fourth in his class at 4-3. Donra took second at 6-1. Other family members also joined them: Russell, first; Patric, first; and Tyler, second, in their respective classes.
-Hall of Fame class in August at Wentzville. Donra took fifth and Virgle, 17th, out of 179 entries.
