Area schools in the south central region were among those contributing to the “Kits 4 Kids” relief project for earthquake-stricken Haiti.
Students and staff at Plato Schools provided 95 kits as part of the 3,072 collected in the region. Statewide, more than 30,000 personal hygiene kits were assembled and donated by Missouri school children and their families during a 10-day period.
The Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education said the project was a “smashing success,” due to the generosity and quick response of thousands of students, parents and teachers across the state. The last boxes of kits were picked up Feb. 5 for delivery to Convoy of Hope, the Springfield-based relief organization that will distribute the hygiene kits to children in Haiti.
“The response to this project has been overwhelming and heartwarming,” said Chris L. Nicastro, commissioner of education. “We asked schools to move very quickly to take part in Kits 4 Kids. Students, parents and teachers found this to be an easy, inexpensive and tangible way for students to make a real contribution to children and families who are suffering in Haiti.”
