The Texas County Food Pantry is participating July 28 in a statewide homeless count.
The Missouri Balance of State Continuum of Care is a bi-annual project that collects information to determine local funding as well as national policy regarding those who are homeless. Tracking homelessness is especially challenging in rural areas, according to the National Coalition for the Homeless.
During the 2009 fiscal year, the food pantry helped fight homelessness with the following financial assistance:
–$2,705 for mortgage assistance.
–$325 for one night’s lodging while waiting for a shelter or to obtain housing.
–$15,069 in rent assistance.
Those numbers do not include utility payments, transportation and other special needs, the food pantry said. In the 2010 fiscal year, the food pantry has already spent more than $5,000 to meet housing needs of county residents.
To be counted in Texas County, homeless persons should contact a social service agency. More information is also available online at www.nationalhomeless.org or www.hud.gov.
