The widow of a pastor shot during a Sunday morning service in the St. Louis area in 2009 will be the speaker Sept. 12 at Houston’s First Baptist Church.
Cindy Winters will present the Sunday morning worship service, which begins at 10:35 a.m., said Dr. Howell Burkhead, senior pastor.
Fred Winters was the senior pastor of First Baptist Church of Maryville, Ill., from 1987 until his death in 2009 when a gunman walked into the building and shot Winters and injured two others. Authorities said the mentally ill man was armed with 30 rounds of ammunition, but his weapon jammed after four shots.
The fatal bullet went straight through Winters’ heart. Another hit his Bible and exploded its pages into confetti.
Cindy Winters, a social worker by training, has become a public speaker much in demand in the last year. She also founded Grace and Hope Ministries (graceandhopeministries.org). Winters says conveying to people her hope in the midst of pain and ministering to others going through loss gives her great joy.
