Don Smith, 81, died Thursday, Jan. 6, 2011, at Texas County Memorial Hospital.
He was born Oct. 18, 1929, in Cedar Grove, son of Thurman E. and Stella Mae Smith. He and Wilma Lavern Sullivan were married April 11, 1952, at Bales Street Baptist Church in Kansas City.
He was baptized April 27, 1980, at Valley Center Baptist Church, where he later became a member. He worked in carpentry in the Kansas City area and was a member of the Carpenter’s Union Local 43. After retiring, he returned to the family home near Hartshorn. He built many homes in the local area after his retirement.
He loved spending time with his family and tending his lawn. He spent many hours feeding hummingbirds, squirrels and other birds in his yard.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Wilma; a grandson; two brothers, James Smith and his twin, Dan Smith; and three sisters, Joyce Sullivan, Lavern Sullivan and Mary Cousins.
Survivors include three children, Dianna Hickman of Kansas City and Rhonda Dooley and Dan Allen Smith Licking; five grandchildren; four step-grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; three sisters, Louise Amato of Licking, Edna Cooper of Illinois and Virginia McKamey of Michigan; a brother, Max Smith of California; and and host of nieces, nephews, other family members and friends.
Services were Saturday, Jan. 8, at Bradford Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Leon Michel officiating. Burial was in Smith Cemetery near Hartshorn.
