Military veteran

Dannie Lee Helton, 83, died Friday, Dec. 9, 2011.

He was born Dec. 17, 1928, son of Chesley Glover and Daisy Effie Miller Helton. He and Loretta Mae Barber were married April 1951 in Lebanon.

He attended school at Palace and Bloodland schools. He graduated from Plato High School in 1946. He was drafted in 1953 into the Army and served two years.

He returned to Palace, where he raised his family and Black Angus cattle. He retired from civil service in 1993.

He was a lifelong member of Palace Union Church. He was a 60-plus year member of Plato Masonic Lodge #469 and Plato Eastern Star #240. He was a Shriner and a member of the Scottish Rite. He also served on the Palace Cemetery Board.

He enjoyed fellowshipping with friends in many organizations. He loved sharing stories.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Loretta; a sister, Carrie Josephine Helton Shukers of Sugarland, Texas; three children, Kathryn Ann, Stephen Lee and Danetta Jo “D.J.”; two grandsons; and two great-grandsons.

Graveside services were Monday, Dec. 12, in Palace Cemetery under the direction of Evans Funeral Home.
