John Carey

A Summersville native was the director of Time Magazine’s “Commercial of the Year.”

John Carey, a 2005 graduate from Summersville High School, produced the award-winning ad for the brand Dove called “Real Beauty Sketches.” In the video, an FBI-trained sketch artist drew women based on their own self-perceptions and then those of total strangers. The commercial’s message was that women are overly critical of their own beauty and should be more comfortable with who they are.

The video, which was uploaded in April, has more than 61 million views. It beat many other popular commercials, including the Geico “Hump Day” camel, Kmart’s “Ship My Pants” ad and Jean-Claude Van Damme doing the splits between two Volvo trucks.

Carey, who was also named the 2013 Cannes Young Director of the Year, lives in Los Angeles, Calif. He graduated from Missouri State University in 2008 and from the Art Center of College and Design in Pasedena, Calif., in 2011.
