The seasons ended for both the Licking and Plato girls’ basketball teams in Wednesday’s sectional round of the state playoffs.
The Lady Wildcats lost 52-33 to Fatima in the Class 3 sectional at Missouri S&T. Plato was defeated 76-52 by Bakersfield in the Class 1 sectional.
Megan Smith, who was battling the flu, led Licking with 16 points. Bailie Osborne was held to four points.
Fatima jumped ahead 17-5 early and led by 11 at the break. The Lady Comets outscored Licking in every quarter.
Licking, which defeated Houston in the championship game of the Class 3 District 10 tournament, finished with a 25-3 record. The Lady Wildcats graduate just two players from a team that won its second straight district title.
“I felt like last year we were just happy to get here, and this year it is more disappointing,” Licking coach Steve Rissler told the Ozark Sports Zone. “If things would have went our way early, it could have been different. But that is part of it.”
Plato led Bakersfield 18-15 after the opening quarter. But Bakersfield used a 20-8 edge in the second quarter to take the lead and pulled away by outscoring the Lady Eagles 19-9 in the third.
Kaylea Kimrey led Plato with 23 points. Lexi McNiel had 13 and Katie Roy added 10 for the Lady Eagles, who last week won the program’s second-ever district title.
“We’ve had a great season, and I hope this taste of success motivates them to come back next year for more,” said Plato head Rich Mueller told the Ozark Sports Zone. “We’re losing two starters but with the main nucleus coming back we’ll definitely be able to build on this experience.”
