Mary Alice Smith, 87, daughter of Phillip Lee Harmon and Mary Ellen Hughes, was born Oct. 9, 1928, in Kansas City, Kan. She passed away Aug. 13, 2016
Mary was united in marriage to Eugene Arthur Smith on July 29, 1950. From this union four daughters were born; Sandra Cook of Springfield, Mo., Kathy Earp of Success, Mo., Carol Longwell of Houston, Mo., and Cheryl Shore of Springfield, Mo.
Mary was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Eugene; and brothers, John, Francis and Eugene Harmon.
Mary began teaching school at a young age, from a one-room school house in the Nagle community. She received her teaching certificate from Southwest Missouri State Teachers College. She taught many levels throughout her 47 years of teaching, from first grade through eighth.
Mary had eight grandchildren who loved to spend time on the farm. Her grandchildren are Jason and Travis Cook, Chris and Jennifer Kirkman, Bailey Earp Bowlin, Christy Longwell Hall and Carson and Carly Shore. Mary taught them the old games like Kick the Can, Hopscotch and Annie Over.
Mary’s nine great-grandchildren loved Easter egg hunts and the candy jar that was always full. She always wanted to feed everyone no matter what time of the day it was.
Mary loved her family and spending time with them. She enjoyed reading, gardening, feeding the birds and tending to her pets. She will be missed by all who knew and loved her.
Visitation is 1-2 p.m. Friday, Aug. 19, at Evans Funeral Home with services following at 2 p.m. The Rev. Ed Hamilton will officiate. Burial will be in Nagle Cemetery. Pallbearers are Jeff Shore, Dan Cook, Steve Earp, Chris Kirkman, Carson Shore, Jimmy Breeden and Jon Southworth.
