A Mountain Grove man died Tuesday afternoon in a crash of an ultralight aircraft in Texas County, authorities said.

Vernon A. Raber, 78, died when the aircraft he was piloting crashed into a treetop just south of his Clinton Drive residence, which is off Nevill Road. He was found at the base of the tree southeast of Dunn by his wife.

Texas County Coroner Tom Whittaker pronounced Raber dead at the scene.

Raber, an experienced pilot, may have had engine trouble, authorities said.

The Texas County Sheriff’s Department and the Federal Aviation Administration are investigating.

The body was released to Elliott-Gentry-Carder Funeral Home. No services are planned.
