Houston Schools

The Houston school board accepted a resignation from the district during Thursday’s monthly meeting.

Custodian Charles “Chuck” Lee is retiring from Houston Schools. His last day is Dec. 30.

Also during the meeting, board members:

•Granted permission to athletic director Brent Hall to survey high school and middle school female athletes regarding their interest in playing volleyball and softball if the softball season was moved to the spring. (Read more about the situation)

•Heard Hall would like to begin offering middle school baseball and softball to students. He also shared construction for the new softball building next to Carter Field will begin when the weather cooperated and will take 2-3 days to complete.

•Approved using Penmac as a resource for managing the district’s substitute teachers. Some changes will be made to the contract.

•Received an evaluation from George Snelling related to Career & Technical Education.

•Recognized students of the month Charlee Sue Jadwin (high school) and Hannah Brooks and Hunter McKinney (middle school). The students led the board in the Pledge of Allegiance.

•Heard an update from Shauna Wells related to the Parent Teacher Organization for the elementary schools. Wells said a movie night fundraiser held earlier in the month was successful.

•Twice heard from patron Jim Cavanaugh during the meeting. Cavanaugh spoke to the board about management of substitute teachers at the beginning of the session. At the end, Cavanaugh addressed the board about vocational classes and test scores.
