Tigers get second victory, just miss another at tourney

The Houston Tigers earned their second win of the season in the Mansfield Tournament — and barely missed their third.

Behind a season-high 58 points, HHS pulled away from Norwood in the second half for a 58-47 win Friday night in the consolation bracket.

On Saturday, the Tigers just missed back-to-back victories in the consolation final as they lost 43-41 to Gainesville.

The game was close throughout. The Tigers (2-4) led by two after and first quarter and 20-19 at the half. It was tied at 34-all entering the fourth.

Lucas Kelley scored 14 points and Tayler Ward had 11 for Houston. Michael Clayton added eight points and a team-best five rebounds.

In the win against Norwood, Kelley led the Tigers with 20 points and a team-high eight rebounds. Ty McCloud scored 13 and Clayton added eight points and seven rebounds before fouling out.

In the tournament opener last Tuesday, HHS lost 62-46 to Ava. Sixth-seeded HHS trailed the No. 3 Bears by just two points in a low-scoring first half but was outscored 43-29 the rest of the way.

Lucas Kelley led Houston with 26 points. McCloud added seven points and Tayler Ward had six. Michael Clayton led the Tigers with six rebounds before fouling out.
