Houston sophomore Shelby Ozier is tagged out attempting to advance to third base during the district semifinals.

The Houston softball team’s 2017 season ended last Thursday with a 16-2 district semifinal loss to Ava.

The Lady Tigers wrapped up their final campaign in the fall with a 10-11 record. Ava defeated Mansfield 2-1 in Friday’s championship game to win Class 2 District 1.

HHS seniors Kaitlyn Root and Madison Lawson had two hits apiece in their final game. Fellow senior Taylor Chipps doubled and scored twice.

The Lady Tigers went head in the top of the first inning. Chipps doubled and with two outs, scored on Lawson’s RBI triple into the left-field corner.

Ava, which had 14 hits, answered with three runs in the bottom half of the inning. The Lady Bears scored four, five and four runs the next three innings to pull away.

Houston’s other run came via a third-inning single by Root to score Chipps, who reached on an error.

In last Wednesday’s opening round the Lady Tigers, scored nine times in the fifth and sixth innings for a 12-11 comeback victory against Seymour.

Senior Jessica Schivitz had three hits to lead the Lady Tigers, who had at least one hit from all nine players and 15 hits total. Chipps, Root, Lawson and Jaden Stell had two hits apiece.

Trailing 9-3, Houston scored four times in the fifth to close the gap. Lawson, Curtis and Schivitz had RBI singles as the Lady Tigers sent nine batters to the plate.

After Seymour (6-14) scored two times in the top of the sixth to extend its advantage to 11-7, HHS answered with five runs. Chipps and Carly Crawford had RBI hits and Shelby Ozier put the Lady Tigers in front for good with a two-out, two-run single.

Houston senior Emily Roberts, who got the complete-game victory, forced a pair of flyouts and groundout in the top of the seventh to end the game.
