Donald McCallister, director of maintenance at Houston Schools, took third place Oct. 15 at the 2018 Ozarks Winter Division 14 tournament sponsored by the Bass World Sports Tournament Association at Lake of the Ozarks. It is a two-man team tournament. McCallister's partner was John Arnold of Illinois, who also caught the largest bass of the tournament. Since 1980 Bass World Sports has held more than 2,500 tournaments in the Midwest and awarded more than 90,000 in Ranger Cup Bonus Awards. McCallister and Arnold weighed in five fish for 14-54 pounds winning 76, including Arnold's 30 for big bass. McCallister is third from the right and Arnold is at his left.

Donna and Richard Adams and Tami King of Raymondville traveled over the weekend to Flying R Ranch at West Plains to enjoy some horseback riding and the fall colors.

Two monsters went to a Halloween party.

Suddenly one said to the other, “A lady just rolled her eyes at me. What should I do?”

The other monster replied, “Be a gentleman and roll them back to her.”

Perfect Carmel Apples

• Mix 2 cups sugar, 1/4 cup light corn syrup and 1/2 cup water in a small saucepan. Bring to a boil over medium-high heat, stirring just until the sugar dissolves.

• Cook, swirling the pan (do not stir), until the mixture is light amber and a candy thermometer registers 320 degrees, 8 to 10 minutes.

• Remove from the heat; slowly whisk in 1/2 cup heavy cream, then 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, 1 teaspoon vanilla extract and a pinch of salt.

• Return to low heat and whisk until smooth. Let cool until the caramel is thick enough to coat a spoon.

• Insert sticks into the stem ends of six apples and dip the apples into the caramel, letting the excess drip off. Roll in toppings if desired, then let cool on a parchment-lined baking sheet coated with cooking spray.
