Texas County was in second place early Monday in the fall firearms deer season. The county ranked second in the state, the Missouri Department of Conservation reported.

Texas County hunters killed 3,972. The breakdown: 1,857 bucks, 398 button bucks and 1,717 does. The season ends Tuesday.

This year’s count surpassed the tally from last year when 3,562 deer were killed in Texas County, which placed third among state counties.

This year’s top three counties as of Monday morning were Howell (4,061), Texas (3,972) and Franklin (3,828).
