A Licking man has been charged by federal authorities with using a hidden camera to record teenage girls getting in and out of showers.
Nathaniel Mares, 35, was charged with sexual exploitation of a child after a family member discovered the recordings while cleaning in December.
Mares is a corrections officer at the South Central Correctional Center in Licking. He is held without bond in the Greene County Jail.
According to a criminal complaint, the family member discovered a computer backpack with an external hard drive and 31 USB flash drives. The person placed a flash drive labeled “home videos” into a computer and discovered videos of two teen girls taken inside bathrooms of Mountain Grove and Licking residences. The person told authorities they recognized both homes.
In one video, authorities said Mares could be seen placing a recording device in the bathroom before the girl later appears to shower.
Mares was arrested Jan. 4 at his mother’s home in Licking by the Texas County Sheriff’s Department. Authorities said they recovered a laptop, hard drive, video recording spy pen, digital recorder and 36 flash drives at the residence.
Federal authorities also said child pornography videos were discovered on flash drives owned by Mares. Prosecutors told the Springfield News- Leader that other “surreptitious” recordings were found, including a recording of a woman and child walking into a Walmart and Mountain Grove Elementary School as well as young girls in swimsuits at a swimming pool.
