Lady Tigers finish third; Root honored

The Houston Lady Tigers won consecutive games for the first time this season to place third in the Thayer Winter Classic.

HHS thumped Couch 62-30 on Friday and then beat the Thayer JV 41-33 in Saturday’s third-place game.

Senior Kaitlyn Root averaged 19 points per game in three matchups to earn all-tournament team honors.

In last Tuesday’s tournament opener, the Lady Tigers slowed the pace for a half but eventually lost 46-25 to host Thayer.

Root scored 18 points as the lone HHS player in double figures. Kennedy Campbell added four.

Houston (5-10) was only behind 19-16 at the half before Thayer scored 11 of the third quarter’s 13 points to begin pulling away.

On Friday, Root led a balanced attack with 22 points in Houston’s 32-point victory against Couch.

Chloe Hunninghake hit five 3-pointers en route to 16 points and Sevanna Rowland added a careerbest 14 points.

The Lady Tigers’ 62 points were the most since they scored 63 in a Dec. 13 victory against Newburg.

In the third-place game, Root had 17 points and Hunninghake added 12 as HHS beat Thayer’s JV.

The Lady Tigers led by two at the half before pulling away with a 13-4 run in the third quarter.
