The City of Houston has released drawings of its proposed new swimming pool.
The eight-lane pool would be built at the current pool location at West Side Park. The cost is estimated at about $1.2 million.
Among the features of the pool would be: zero entry kids area with animal spouts; reinstallation of the current water slide, rock climbing, a low-dive board, zipline, adjustable basketball goal and a swim lift that meets federal disability standards. No updates of the bath house are included in the pricing.
The city has applied for a $250,000 grant with a 50-50 match component for the pool.
Voters will decide April 2 whether to increase the city’s sale tax rate by one cent for police, fire and parks and recreation. Half the tax would go to parks and recreation.

The city council in February approved spending $30,000 for a splash pad south of the current pool. The 20×30 area will be located in a portion of what is now a sand volleyball court next to the pool. It will operate on a five-minute timer and be free for public use.
The splash pad will accommodate 20-30 children at a time and feature fresh water in several features. An old city fire truck will be nearby for kids to play on. Sloan said she hopes to eventually include a water spraying feature with the truck.
It is hoped to be opened by Memorial Day.
