Myrtle Augusta Benson, 86, daughter of George Sylvester and Ida Augusta Bradford Bowen, was born July 1, 1914, near Plato. She died Jan. 8, 2001, at St. John’s Regional Health Center in Springfield. The Bensons operated a store in Plato during the ’40s and ’50s. Mrs. Benson was a member of the Plato Christian Church, where she was organist and pianist; and Order of Eastern Star for 52 years, where she assisted with the music. After moving to Springfield in 1963, she taught private piano and organ lessons and practiced her handiwork of knitting and crocheting. She was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters, Ollie and Ruby; two brothers, William and George, who died in World War II and was buried in Belgium; and her husband, Vernon in 1963. Surviving are nieces and nephews. Services are 2 o’clock today (Thursday) at the Plato Christian Church with Eugene Earp officiating. Burial will be in the Lynch Cemetery under the direction of Evans Funeral Home. Visitation is noon to time for the services today at the Plato Christian Church.”
