Jimmie Ferrel Scantlin, 67, son of Dewey and Nola Hubbs Scantlin, was born Oct. 16, 1933, at Ashley Creek. He died Feb. 21, 2001, at Texas County Memorial Hospital in Houston. He married Madine York Sept. 23, 1957. They had five children. During the Korean War, he served for four years in the U.S. Navy assigned to the USS Rogers. He was awarded the Korean Service Medal with one Star, the United Nations Service Medal, the China Service Medal and the National Defense Service Medal. After the war, he worked at International Shoe Co., at Montauk State Park, operated a saw mill with Bud Brim and worked for Jackson Township for many years. His favorite pastimes were fishing, hunting and outings with family and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Bobby; and one grandson. Surviving are his wife of the home; his four children, Jimmy, David and Edgar Scantlin and Donna Wallace; one stepdaughter, Judy Swindell; 10 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Services were Feb. 24 at the Evans Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Wesley Wallace officiating. Burial was in the Ashley Creek Cemetery.”
