Wilford William Carter Sr., 71, son of Oscar and Leah Snyder Carter, was born June 25, 1929. He died March 7, 2001, at Lester E. Cox Medical Center South in Springfield following a short illness. He served in the U.S. Army on two tours from June 1948 to 1955, where he received an honorable discharge April 22, 1955. He served with the 526th Armed Infantry in Germany and Korea. After his military tours, he worked in Chicago as a heavy machinery op-erator for sev-eral years. He returned to the Ozarks and married Hazel Irene Ramsey March 8, 1958, at Houston. They had six children. He fell timber for local sawmills and was an avid coon hunter and fisherman. He enjoyed gardening and teaching his grandchildren how to build rabbit traps, bait a hook to catch the biggest fish and train their coon dogs to track the biggest coon. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers and an in-fant daughter, Joyce May. Surviving are his wife; one son, Wilford Carter Jr. of Bucyrus; four daughters, Nancy Kern and Darlene Carter of Bucyrus, Kathy Murray and Lorene Cline of Success; three brothers, Harvey and Marshall Carter of Bucyrus and Vearn Carter of Mountain Grove; three sisters, Ruby Ramsey and Hazel Postlewait of Bucyrus and Lorene Tollefson of Milton Freewater, Ore.; and eight grandchildren. Services were March 10 at the Evans Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Gene Postlewait officiating. Burial was in the Oakland Cemetery at Success.”
