Fall youth hoop signups continue at YMCA

Youth basketball leagues begin Oct. 15 at the Walla Walla YMCA. Registration ends Oct. 14 and space is limited, so sign up early.

Boys in first and second grades will have one practice weekly.

First- to second-grade and third- to fourth-grade girls also will practice once a week. Practices will be hourly from 3:30-6:30 p.m. Monday-Friday. Games will be held Saturdays.

Winter basketball leagues, which begin in January, will be offered to boys in third grade and older.

Costs for the leagues are first- to fourth-graders, $39 for YMCA members, $62 for non-members. Fifth- to eighth-graders, $45 for members, $72 for non-members.

Financial assistance is available.

Also, the YMCA is looking for volunteer coaches to help during the fall basketball league season.

Wolves improve men’s soccer record to 6-3-1

COLLEGE PLACE – The Walla Walla College Wolves men’s soccer team went 2-1 in play last week.

The Wolves opened play with a 4-0 shut out of Whitman’s club team in their home opener Wednesday. Walla Walla forward Kevin Felker scored the first goal two minutes into the game, with teammate Jared Hiscock scored off Gabriel Mauries’ assist halfway through the second half. Mauries scored 10 minutes later on a penalty kick, and Jorge Fernandez finished scoring off another Mauries assist.

On Friday, the Wolves traveled to Idaho and beat Northwest Nazarene, 2-0. Francis Colls scored first for Walla Walla, and Dominque Hunt tallied the other goal as goalkeeper Tim Lo recorded his third shut out.

On Sunday, Walla Walla lost at NAIA conference team Albertson’s College, 4-0.

The loss leaves the Wolves with a 6-3-1 record on the season. They next play Washington State University Friday at 3 p.m. on the Walla Walla field.

Earthquakes top Orofino in home soccer match

The boys under-13 Earthquakes soccer team beat Orofino, 5-0, at home last Saturday.

Salvador Esquivel scored three goals for the Walla Walla squad, with Bo Donnelly and Sean Williams each adding a goal.

“I am very impressed with our ability to maintain possession,’ states coach Frank Skorina. “Our last goal was the result of good passes between five different players.’

The Earthquakes are now 2-0-2 for the season and next play in St. Maries, Idaho, on Oct. 15.

W-M slates alumni football game Oct. 17 ATHENA – Weston-McEwen High School’s alumni football game is set at 7 p.m. Monday, Oct. 17, at the high school football field.

Teams will consist of odd graduating years vs. even graduating years. All men and women alumni are welcome.

A barbecue will precede the game at 6 p.m.
