The Houston track team is sending four to state.
Travis Swearengin and the 4×100 relay team of Johnny Record, Justin Stringer, Ryan Holden and Swearengin each finished second at Saturday’s sectionals at Missouri State University to earn berths at the state meet. The 81st Missouri State High School Athletic Association track and field championships begin Friday at Dwight T. Reed Stadium in Jefferson City.
Swearengin, who was second at districts, also finished second in the 100 meters on Saturday.
The relay team had a strong performance after placing fourth out of nine teams in districts. The team’s time of 46.06 was second only to Marionville.
“We had bad handoffs in districts but worked hard on those during the week heading in to sectionals,” coach Eric Sloan said. “At sectionals we had perfect handoffs.”
Swearengin will run his first 100-meter heat at 1:25 p.m. Saturday. The relay team competes for the first time at 3:15.
Swearengin and Stringer are also important members of the baseball team.
“I need to say a big thank you to baseball coach Brent Hall for allowing Justin Stringer and Travis Swearengin to run for me this year,” Sloan said. “They have added a big boost to our team.”
