The Houston Lady Tigers 15-and-under softball team won two of its first three games to begin the summer season.
After losing its opener 17-11 against Mountain View on May 17, Houston was victorious 16-11 at Summersville the following day and beat Cabool 20-4 on Monday.
In the season opener, Shelbi Moore struck out nine in the loss. She was also 2-for-4 with an RBI and two runs.
Sydney Wilson went 4-for-4 with four RBIs to lead the offense. Camie Weisacosky went 3-for-4 and Carmen Floyd had a pair of hits for Houston, which committed nine errors.
“This was the first time this team had been on the field together, and it showed,” coach Craig Pounds said. “This group has lots of potential, and I think things will come together. When they do, they will be a very good team.”
The following day against Summersville, Houston scored 10 times in the sixth inning in a come-from-behind victory.
Paula Chernowsky, who had two hits and four RBIs, sparked the rally with a three-run home run. Chernowsky’s home run was hit an estimated 240 feet to left field.
“That a shot for a 14-year-old,” Pounds said. “I don’t think that’s the last home run we will see this season.”
Wilson went 5-for-5 with a double and two RBIs. Moore was 2-for-2 with a double and three walks, three runs scored and two RBIs. Lyndsey Tarrants had two hits and an RBI.
Moore had six strikeouts on her way to the victory for the Lady Tigers, who committed three errors.
“This was a much better game all the way around for us,” Pounds said. “We really are learning as we go.”
On Monday at Cabool, Hannah Pounds returned from an injury and went 2-for-3 with three runs, two RBIs and two steals to lead Houston.
Ándrea White had two hits and scored three times. Moore tripled and knocked in four runs.
Moore, who took over in the first inning in relief, allowed only three baserunners while striking out eight in three innings.
“Moore really pitched well and that was the game,” coach Pounds said. “We hit the ball, ran the bases and took advantage of errors when we could. This could be a help to get us focused on what we need to do every game.”
