Winona “Nonie” Carolyn Barkus, 84, daughter of Billie and Vendla Hanson Evans, was born June 4, 1922, at Denver, Colo. She died May 27, 2007, at Northpark Village of Ozark.

She married Jerome W. Backus April 3, 1942, in Johnson, Kan.

The Backus family lived in Wichita, Kan., and Vanzant before moving to a farm south of Houston in the late ’60s. They left Houston in the late ’90s.

Mrs. Backus was a secretary at The Lee Co., the radio station, Brown Shoe Co. and for Attorney John Tindle.

She was preceded in death by her parents and one brother.

Surviving are her husband of 65 years; seven children, Donita Smith of Denver, N.C., Aderra Bryant and Beverly Altom of Ozark, Jerry Backus Jr. of Bull Shoals, Ark., Delrae Glidwell of Bolivar, David Backus of Carthage and Daniel Backus of Houston; one sister, Arlene Ralph of Milwaukee, Wis.; 18 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

Services were May 31 at the Barnes Family Funeral Home at Ozark with Jerry Backus officiating. Burial was in the Missouri Veterans Cemetery at Springfield.
