Texas County’s population grew about 2.4 percent over the last six years, according to data released last week by the U.S. Census Bureau. The report shows growth for the county’s six municipalities.
Houston’s head count was estimated at 2,023 on July 1, 2006. Other population figures: Cabool, 2,156; Licking, 1,512; Summersville, 560; Raymondville, 443; and Plato, 66. The data does not reflect about 1,600 inmates housed at Licking’s South Central Correctional Center. When those figures are factored, Licking is the largest community in the county. The bureau said population in each community increased over the last year.
Texas County’s population was pegged at 23,566, a jump of about 500 from the 2000 census. There were about 11,196 housing units in the county. About 77 percent of the county’s residents own their own home. Another 7.2 percent live in multi-unit structures. The report says the median value of homes in the area was $61,000 in 2000. Median household income was estimated at $27,193 in 2004. About 20 percent lived in poverty in 2004, which represents about 20 percent of the population.
Private non-farm jobs data totals 4,306, which is down 10.7 percent since the 2000 census, the agency said. Retail sales in the county were estimated at almost $129.4 million in 2002.
