Joyce Eileen Bettes, 78, daughter of Guy and Martha Duncan Williams, was born Dec. 15, 1928, at Evening Shade. She died July 18, 2007, at her home at Evening Shade.
She married Frank Bettes Jr. March 3, 1947. They had three children.
Mrs. Bettes was a cook at the Roby Café for the last 14 years. She was known for her chicken and dumplings, strawberry-rhubarb cobbler and other dishes she prepared for friends at the café.
She was a member of the Roby Baptist Church, where she served in the nursery, Vacation Bible School and was a Sunday school teacher. She was a member of the Lions Club.
Her hobbies were being outdoors, tending her flowers, mowing her yard and watching the hummingbird feeders.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband; two brothers, Guy Ross Williams Jr. and Dale Williams, and three infant granddaughters.
Surviving are two daughters, Connie Wade and Arleta Weber of Evening Shade; a son, Terry Bettes of Roby; one sister, Claudeen Handley of Evening Shade; six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Services were July 21 at the Roby Baptist Church with the Rev. Brock Davis officiating. Burial was in the Palace Cemetery under the direction of Evans Funeral Home.
