Texas County Sheriff Carl Watson is warning citizens of a telephone scam that reached the area Tuesday morning.

Watson said two people called his office after receiving identical calls. They were told they had won $500,000 by finishing third in a sweepstakes and needed to pay insurance for the money. The caller asked that the person get a $2,400 money gram from Wal-Mart and wire it to Canada in a family member’s name.

Watson urged anyone who receives the call to immediately contact authorities.

“Please don’t do anything to send money because it’s definitely a scam,” Watson said.
