The Houston Tigers’ offense appears ready for competition.

Playing for the first time in public under new coach Chris Edwards, the Tigers’ offense was sharp Friday night at the annual pig roast football scrimmage.

Senior tailback Kirk Pierce had several long runs and a pair of touchdowns, and quarterback David Weybright looked smooth directing Houston’s new multiple I-formation offense. He completed a high percentage of his passes and hooked up with junior Martin Crawford for a long touchdown.

“I was really pleased with the offense,” Edwards said. “They made a couple small mistakes – things we can get fixed – but the kids really competed hard.”

After waiting more than an hour to take the field as inclement weather passed through the area, Houston’s offense dominated the scrimmage. The Tigers showed several looks, including shotgun formations and multiple receivers.

Edwards said he has fully implemented his system to his new team. Now, it’s just a matter of fine-tuning things.

Houston gets another preseason test when the Tigers face Rolla, St. James and Owensville at 6 p.m. Friday in the Rolla Jamboree. The season opener is Aug. 31 at Marionville.

“The main thing is to get better at what we do,” Edwards said of the preseason. “To go live competition so we can get it on film and see the things we need to improve on before Week 1.”
