The Houston Herald won seven state honors Saturday in the 2007 Missouri Better Newspaper Contest. Announcement of the awards came at the 141st annual meeting of the Missouri Press Association in St. Louis.

The Herald’s Web site at www.houstonherald.com was judged the best among weekly newspapers in Missouri. The Herald’s cartoonist, Kathy Richardson, took the top two spots in the best editorial cartoon category. The newspaper also won a general excellence award for weekly newspapers, one of five papers honored in the category. The Herald took honorable mention.

The Herald also won third place in the state for service to its community. Judges recognized the newspaper for its leadership in a downtown revitalization project.

Richardson won third place among weekly newspapers for a promotion she created that ran in December 2006. “The Paper That Jack Read,” also appears at www.houstonherald.com.

A feature penned by Richardson won third statewide. The story highlighted two couples celebrating milestones.

A perennial winner in the contest, the Herald’s prizes were the most it has received in two decades. The entries were judged by the Kansas Press Association.

Herald Publisher Brad Gentry was elected Friday during the annual business meeting to the Missouri Press Association’s board of directors.
