Playing a five-set match for the first time in program history, the Houston varsity volleyball team downed Thayer 25-14, 25-7, 25-13 on the road Thursday night.
Kate Harper had seven kills and freshman Erica Kenney and Amber Honig had ssix apiece. Janell Gentry had a team-best 12 assists, and freshman Sarah Pierce added 11.
“The girls played well,” coach Debbie James said. “We are still working out kinks in the lineup. This lineup worked well, but we’ll have to see how it works under pressure from stronger opponents.”
Keeney led Houston with five blocks. Honig added three. Gentry had four aces.
Under new MSHSAA rules, teams may agree to play best-of-3 or 5 matches. Because Thayer doesn’t have a JV, the teams played five sets.
