The Houston varsity volleyball team’s long SCA winning streak finally came to an end.
The Lady Tigers dropped their first conference game since Oct. 2002 when they were defeated 25-16, 25-21 on the road Tuesday night at Mountain Grove.
“We have a big, red X on our backs. We’re the team the conference is gunning for, so we have to be up for each match,” Houston coach Debbie James said. “We just played flat. They are going through the motions. We need to get a little fire ignited somewhere.”
Kortney Huffman and Courtney Sillyman led the Lady Tigers (4-6-1) with four kills apiece. Senior Janell Gentry dished out 11 assists, Erica Keeney had eight blocks and Chelsey Williams added eight digs.
“I was very pleased at how well Chelsey Williams played,” James said. “She had almost a perfect passing night on defense and serve receive.”
On Thursday, the Lady Tigers were defeated 26-24, 25-19 by Conway in straight sets.
Amber Honig led Houston with three kills. Keeney had three aces and three blocks, Gentry added nine assists and Williams had six digs.
James said the team needed to attack more aggressively and improve passing to the setter and setting accuracy.
“We know what we have to work on,” James said. “We still have lots of time left to improve our game.”
