The Houston Alumni Association inducted a new member into its “Educator Hall of Fame” and collected about $3,000 for its scholarship fund for graduating seniors during the organization’s annual banquet Saturday at Hiett Gymnasium.
The alumni gathering brought scores of HHS grads to the Houston School District campus for a Saturday afternoon mixer and the banquet that night. A breakfast was earlier in the day at the Houston Senior Center.
Classes graduating in years ending in “2” and “7” received special recognition, as did speech and debate participants over the years.
The matriarch of the HHS program – retired teacher Iva Rust – was inducted into the “Educator Hall of Fame. Jim Impey, a former pupil, presented the introduction, highlighting her career and the influence she had on students.
The organization’s scholarship fund – which stood at about $148,472 at year’s end – also benefited. The Odd Fellows contributed $1,500, while the class of 1947 gave $400 and the class of 1952 contributed $1,000. Three scholarships, totaling $800 each, were presented to graduating seniors in 2007.
