One week before districts, coach Debbie James said the Houston varsity volleyball team had one of its poorest efforts of the season.
“We just pick our nights to show up and play, and this wasn’t one of them,” James said after Monday night’s 25-17, 25-15 loss at Summersville.
The Lady Tigers, seeded second at next week’s Class 2 Distrct 9 tournament, had 19 hitting errors and just 13 kills against Summersville.
“That’s unheard of and is a good indication that we weren’t prepared mentally to play,” James said.
Houston also had 15 passing errors and two total blocks. James said each one of her front row players should average two or three blocks per match.
The Lady Tigers, who received a first-round bye at districts, will host the Cabool-Plato winner at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday. The championship match is at 8.
“It hurts to see a team with so much potential be so passive about their playing,” James said. “They are in shape, they have the skills. It’s up to them if they want to fight. We will have to step it up at districts and play with a little passion for the game if we want to go on.”
