James Newell Hosey, 92, son of Mary Elzada Poindexter and Robert Elwood Hosey, was born June 8, 1915. He died Sept. 25, 2007, at the Missouri Veterans Home at Mount Vernon.

In his career, he pursued science and math interests. He taught physics and math at Houston in 1938, where he met his wife, Dortha Crawford.

In 1943, he joined the Navy, receiving meteorology training at the University of Chicago, Ill., and taught weather to Navy pilots.

After his discharge, he taught math at Mountain Grove and later became a meteorologist with the U.S. Weather Bureau. During his career, he worked with C.C. Williford in Springfield. With promotions, he was transferred to Cheyenne, Wyo., Scottsbluff, Neb., Topeka, Kan., and Raleigh, N.C., ending his career as one of the leading state forecasters.

He was a member of the Grace United Methodist Church, Masonic York Rite, American Meteorological Society, American Legion and National Association of Federal Retirees.

Mr. Hosey enjoyed visiting with neighbors and mall friends on his daily walks. He was a carpenter, mechanic, appliance repair person and gardener at home.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Hugh; sister, Frances; and two grandchildren.

Surviving are his wife of 67 years; his children, Sylvia Richardson, Richard Hosey and Lisa Hosey; three grandchildren, two great-grand

children and three step-grandchildren.

Services were Sept. 28 at Greenlawn Funeral Home South in Springfield with burial in the Brookline Cemetery.
