Unbeaten 7th grade girls win Liberty tournament

The Houston seventh grade girls’ basketball team extended its perfect start to the season by winning the Liberty Middle School Tournament last week.

The Lady Tigers outlasted Mountain Grove 22-21 Friday in the championship game to improve to 8-0.

“These girls are mentally tough and refuse to lose,” Houston coach Katie Stack said. “They seem to thrive on the pressure of close games and truly believe in one another.”

Houston, which defeated Ava 21-8 in the opening round and cruised past Liberty 24-9 in the semifinals, got eight points from Kenzie Scheets and six by Kayla Herndon in the title game. Four others scored two points apiece.

The championship game played out like the Lady Tigers’ previous meeting against Mountain Grove that they won in triple overtime. Houston trailed by two points after the first and third quarters.

Stack credited her players’ composure down the stretch as the key to winning.

“The guards on the floor during these minutes – Kayla Herndon, Kaighin Hunninghake, Amber Sillyman and Scheets – played with maturity beyond their years,” Stack said. “They kept their composure during the pressure minutes of the game and all proved to be clutch players when the pressure was on.”

Sillyman led Houston with eight points in the semifinals against Liberty. Scheets had a team-best six points against Ava.
