Bethany Korte drove in the game-winning run with a fifth-inning sacrifice fly to lift the Houston Lady Tigers softball team past Hartville 7-6 Thursday.
After letting a 6-0 lead slip away when Hartville scored six times in the bottom of the fourth, Houston (1-0) regained the lead in its next at-bat and held on to win its first game of 2008.
“The girls never gave up. That’s good for a young team, especially playing a team that beat them the year before,” said first-year coach Boulder McKinney. “I was proud of the way they kept themselves in the game.”
Stefanie Mosley started the winning rally with a single. She stole two bases and scored on Korte’s sac fly.
Korte had two of the Lady Tigers’ six hits. Whitney Sillyman, Shelbi Moore and Korte all singled in the victory.
Amber Postlewait struck out three batters and walked two in the complete-game victory. All six Hartville runs were earned.
Houston scored four times in the top of the first without a base hit. Moore, Lyndsey Tarrants and Mosley all drew bases-loaded walks and another runner scooted home on a passed ball.
Sillyman singled home Postlewait, who was hit by a pitch, in the second to make it 5-0. Moore added to the lead with a RBI single that scored Paula Chernowsky.
