Despite missing four of its top six players, the Houston tennis team rolled past Licking 8-1 Tuesday.

Jeff Stilley won his No. 1 singles match 8-1. Samantha Jones (8-1), Dalton Wilson (8-3), Emily Stubbs (8-3), Lainey Casper (8-6) and Michael Shea (8-4) were also victorious in singles action.

Stilley and Wilson won their doubles match 6-4, and Jones and Casper teamed up for a 6-2 win.

The Tigers’ top three players missed the match due to a school function. Another player missed the bus.

“We had a number of kids step up and play in positions they normally do not play in and do an excellent job,” Houston coach John Jordan said.

On Monday, Jonathan Page rallied from a 5-2 deficit to win his singles match 9-7 at Waynesville. Page’s victory was the lone match Houston won in an 8-1 loss.

On Friday, Page won 8-3 in a rain-shortened match against Salem. Andrew Finn led his No. 5 match 6-2 before it was halted.

Jones and Stilley each lost 8-5. Kell was defeated 8-3.
