Howard Wilby Harmon, 91, son of Ottis Harmon and Alma Brown Harmon, was born March 8, 1917, at Summersville. He died May 18, 2008, at Mountain View Heath Care.
He married Ola Mae Scoggs Barton. They had one son and were later divorced.
During his lifetime, Mr. Harmon operated a dairy farm for many years and was an insurance agent, operating his own business – Harmon Insurance Agency in Summersville, where he sold Cameron Mutual Insurance.
After retirement, he ran stock cattle on his farm.
Mr. Harmon was a past mayor of Summersville, a long-time member of the Summersville Development Corp. and member of the senior housing board, where he was the president.
He was a member of the Church of God at Summersville and the Masonic Lodge of Summersville for more than 50 years. He held various offices including past master. He enjoyed visits from his church family when he was unable to attended due to ill health.
He enjoyed hunting, especially turkeys.
He was preceded in death by his parents and son, Bernard Neal.
Surviving are his brother, John Harmon of Springfield; sister, Shirley Hickman of St. Charles; and three grandchildren.
Services were May 21 at the Bradford Funeral Home Chapel in Summersville with the Rev. Alva Trowbridge officiating. Masonic rites were held. Burial was in the Big Creek Cemetery.
