Sales tax collected by Houston merchants took a significant decrease during the latest monthly distribution, reports the Missouri Department of Revenue.

Revenue from a one-cent sales tax totaled $60,706, which is down $24,594 from the same period a year ago. For the year, collections are up $950 from a year ago. About $264,062 has been generated.

Two quarter-cent sales taxes for transportation needs and utility work totaled $14,874 each. For the year, $63,375 has been collected. That’s nearly unchanged from a year ago.

An eighth-cent sales tax is collectedly locally for debt repayment on a new fire truck. The total was $7,423 for the month. For the year, the tally is $31,596.

The reports are considered a good barometer of economic activity.
