A Springfield man is charged following a July 4 crash that downed a tree and caused damage to another, Houston police said.

A city officer was on foot patrol at about 3:20 a.m. when he observed a vehicle traveling northbound at a high speed on Grand Avenue. Later, the vehicle skidded on some wet pavement and drove off the right side of the road. One tree was knocked completed over, causing it to fall on an overhead cable.

The driver, Cullen G. McIntyre, 24, of Springfield, fled on foot, but was later located. He told an officer that a deer had run in front of his vehicle, causing him to lose control.

He is charged with operating a motor vehicle in a careless and imprudent manner and leaving the scene of a motor vehicle accident.
