FUN IN THE MUD: Drivers compete in first-ever event

Organizers hope two events planned for the Houston Area Chamber of Commerce Fairgrounds will generate enough profit to complete the organization’s community building there.

The first event is a “mud run” at the fairgrounds arena. Action begins at 2 p.m. Saturday. A demolition derby is Nov. 1.

Completion of several phases of work at the community building was recently finished, but more remains to be done, said Glenn Romines Jr., who is working on the project. Interior painting work and installation of a drop ceiling were recently completed. Romines’ firm also donated several tables and about 300 cushioned chairs.

Romines said completion of the building is critical to filling a void in the community – the inability to hold large gatherings.

Plans for the community building also include adding a stage, more round tables, preparing the concrete floor with a material that can easily be washed and adding multi-media capabilities, such as a sound and video system for presentations.
