Tory Burgess had 13 assists and Erica Keeney put down six kills to lead the Houston Lady Tigers past rival Licking 25-15, 25-23 Tuesday night in their 2008 season opener.

Amber Honig, Sarah Pierce, Keeney and Burgess had two blocks apiece for Houston (1-0). Lainey Casper had a team-high 10 digs, and Honig added eight.

“This was a good win,” Houston coach Debbie James said.

James said she was especially pleased with the Lady Tigers’ first set.

“The girls played very aggressive in the first set,” she said. “We did a lot of good things, and have a lot to work on.”

Houston returns to the court at 6 p.m. today (Thursday) at Cuba before participating in Saturday’s tournament at Branson. The Lady Tigers’ first home match is Sept. 15 against Licking.
