NEW: Fork lift overturns outside Hiett Gymnasium

A construction worker escaped injury around 11 a.m. Monday when he leapt from a large fork lift as it overturned outside Hiett Gymnasium.

The man, who was taking materials up a hillside on the east side of the gym for roof repairs, jumped from the machine as it tumbled to its side, a co-worker said. He landed about 15 feet away and was uninjured.

The arm of the fork lift crashed onto a fence around two propane tanks, which were turned off as a plan was organized to remove the machinery. The fork lift remained on its side until a pair of wreckers pulled it upright shortly before 3 p.m.
