Houston Elementary students to polls Thursday

Houston Elementary students will step into the real world for a brief moment today (Thursday) and get firsthand experience of the power of participation in our democracy as they vote in the 2008 National Student/Parent Mock Election.

Students from kindergarten through the fifth grade will each have the opportunity to select the president and Missouri’s governor at the simulated election. The event will include an election official – Elementary Principal LeAnn Edington – checking off each registered voter, color ballots, privacy booths and ‘I voted’ stickers.

Houston’s results will be entered into a nationwide online database that will compare its results to those of students across the country. More than 400 Houston students are anticipated to participate.

The mock election is a product of the Herald’s Newspaper In Education program, which is sponsored by The Bank of Houston.
