Ettie Marie Mathews, 81, died Friday, Nov. 21, 2008, at her daughter’s home in Summersville.
She was born April 16, 1927, in Lufkin, Texas, daughter of Samuel Elton Roper and Ida Mae Willis Roper. She and Mat Matthews were married Aug. 22, 1945
She and her husband moved from Texas to the Summersville area in 2002. She enjoyed traveling, sewing, embroidering and gardening.
She was preceded in death by her parents and husband; four brothers, Robert Roper, Joe Roper, Kenneth Roper and Claiborn Roper; and four sisters, Jewel Roper, Mary Holcolm, Ecel Movesession and Lucille Nichols.
Survivors include two daughters, Sheron Rabun of Summersville and Patricia Updegraff of Austin, Texas; three grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and a niece.
Graveside services under the direction of Bradford Funeral Home were Sunday, Nov. 23, in Dixie Cemetery near Summersville.
