Don’t tell Houston shoppers about the national recession: Sales tax revenue in the City of Houston increased dramatically during the latest monthly recording period, the Missouri Department of Revenue said.

Receipts from a one-cent sales tax totaled $40,319, which was up $21,639 from a year ago. For the year, $525,211 has been collected. That’s up about 6.7 percent for the year.

Retailers also collect two quarter-cent sales taxes for road improvements and utility needs. Each generated about $9,827, which is up $5,348 from a year ago. For the year, the tally is about $126,700 on each, which is up about $7,500 individually.

An eighth-cent sales for debt repayment on a new fire truck totaled $4,913, which is up $2,705 from a year ago.
