A more than $200,000 Missouri Department of Transportation grant will allow for a major upgrade in streets and sidewalks near the Houston School District campus.
The City of Houston learned of the funding Friday, which will add sidewalks, bike lanes and other improvements to several locations near the school, said Elaine Campbell, development director for the city.
Several areas are targeted for work:
Intersection of Chestnut Street and Bryan Street
•Sidewalks would be added on the north side of Chestnut from Bryan Street to Davis Street.
•Replacing the sidewalk along Bryan from Chestnut to the south side of the Houston Elementary School parking lot.
•Adding a sidewalk on the east side of Bryan from Chestnut to Mill Street.
Existing elementary parking lot on west side of Bryan Street
•Adding a stop bar for patrons exiting the parking lot onto Bryan to protect pedestrians.
Future Elementary parking lot east of Bryan Street
•Add sidewalk on south side of Mill Street (from Bryan to Davis) to connect residential area to Houston Elementary School.

•A bike lane – pavement markings – would be added on both sides of Bryan Street from Chestnut Street to Ozark Avenue.
•Replace sidewalk on west side of Bryan Street from school parking lot to Ozark Avenue.
•Add sidewalk on east side of Bryan.
Intersection of Ozark Avenue and Bryan Street
•Change on-street parking to angular (60 degree) to reduce backing conflicts.
•Add bike lane on south side of Ozark Avenue.
•Widen pedestrian sidewalk on north side of Ozark Avenue and west side of school street (in front of middle school) to 10-foot bike and pedestrian path.
Ozark Street and jog to Pine Street
•Change on-street parking to angular (60 degree) to reduce backing conflicts
•Add bike lane (pavement marking) on south side from Bryan to First streets and along the north side of Pine Street from school street to First Street.
Intersection of Walnut and First streets
•Crosswalks along west and north sides of intersection to provide safe routes from sidewalk to county library.
