The Houston Tigers fell to 1-2 Thursday night with a 52-48 loss to unbeaten Strafford.
Kyle Poynter had 20 points and forward Ty Scheets scored 14 of his season-high 16 points in the second half.
Strafford’s Jared Yarberry led all scores with 21 points.
The Tigers had made six more field goals than Strafford, but missed six of their 10 free throws. Strafford was 16-for-20 at the foul line.
Houston (1-2) pulled even when Poynter drilled a short jumper at the end of the first quarter and went ahead 11-9 on David Weybright’s layin early in the second. But Poynter’s jumper that made it 15-14 was Houston’s last advantage.
Strafford (6-0) led by three at the half and stretched its lead to 36-31 entering the fourth quarter. The advantage swelled to eight points with 51 seconds left and was still seven when Poynter made a triple at the buzzer.
